CPE 662/612: Managing the Road Environment

This  unit addresses the following topics
Introduction to Environmental Issues – description of standards and definitions of terms associated with air quality, water quality, erosion, sediment control, water sensitive urban design (permeable pavements), roadside planting, protection of fauna, biodiversity, traffic noise, traffic vibration and resource use.
Traffic Noise Impacts –the contribution of pavement surfacing to traffic noise impacts, techniques for minimising noise through design and maintenance of pavements, national and international standards
Environmental impacts of land transport – vehicle fleet models, commercial vehicles, environmental capacity analysis, pollutant run-off and water/soil contamination, environmental management of pavement maintenance.
Embedded Greenhouse Gas Production – emission targets – national/state, contribution of road construction and operation, alternative materials and technologies.
Recycling in Pavements – reuse of pavement materials, use of waste materials, recycling technologies.
Sustainability – environmental performance, energy implications, resource strategies, research directions
Alternative Road Transport Systems – vehicle management systems, potential improvements, future directions.
