CPE 663/613: Fundamentals of Road Construction
CPE613 Fundamentals of Road Construction consists of the following five topics:
• Topic 1, Construction Management Overview This topic provides information on the necessary planning and management of road construction, together with an overview of the resources required. The successful completion of any road construction will be heavily dependent on the sound planning and development of works and resource programs which reflect the detailed specifications or desired outcomes. Equally as important is the need to rigorously monitor and maintain the programs throughout the project life, particularly programs associated with quality, financial and contract management.
• Topic 2, Preliminary Investigations, This topic gives an overview of the necessary elements required in planning and managing investigation works prior to commencement of major site works in road construction. Preliminary site investigations are an essential prior to road construction to ensure that any impediments to construction activity are identified and managed. In particular, it is important to be aware of any environmental or community based issues which need to be understood and managed as a result of construction works. Thorough site investigation and subsequent informed management processes will minimise the potential for major problems or conflicts to arise which could result in construction delays, additional costs and importantly, poor public relations.
• Topic 3, Setting Out, The construction of a road to the alignment, gradient and crossfalls selected by the designer often involve a considerable amount of earthworks. This topic describes the operations necessary for the setting out and control of earthworks operations. A brief outline is provided of the elements involved in geometric design. Establishment of control lines and bench marks are specialised survey operations that are not covered in this unit.
• Topic 4, Earthworks, Earthworks may be described as all operations involved in the loosening, removing and depositing of earth, soil and rock and this topic provides information on the construction of earthworks and the preparation of pavement foundations subsequent to the construction of a pavement structure. Earthwork operations for roadworks provide the foundation for the pavement, road furniture and landscaping. If it is not constructed well and is not neat in appearance, this will be reflected, if only at a later date, through to the surface. Public acceptance of a road job, like all products, is dependent upon appearance. There is really only one opportunity to achieve a good looking job and that is while suitable machinery is still on site and other work does not interfere with efficient plant operation.
Topic 5, Roadsides, Roadsides provide a range of functions, including: Access for the construction and maintenance of the road, control of surface water drainage, the provision of underground drainage, the provision of safety barriers, signs and lighting for the safe operation of the road, landscaping as a buffer zone to integrate the road into the surrounding environment or reduction in noise, the provision of paths for pedestrians and cyclists and access for electricity, water, gas and telecommunications infrastructure.
