Grading System

The CPEE grading system consists of three parts. The first set is the final grades awarded to a student as a result of study undertaken during a semester. CPEE uses a Criterion-Referenced System for awarding such grades where students are evaluated against an absolute scale. The second set is interim grades which indicate where a student is undertaking further assessment prior to being awarded a final grade in a Unit. The third set relates to grades awarded for study undertaken external to CPEE or for recognition of prior learning.

Notes.

  1. The interim grade of SA for Supplementary Assessment is awarded when a student achieves an overall mark for a Unit between 45% and 49% and has passed any mandated hurdle. The student must have demonstrated good overall progress in the program. Formal end of semester examinations are not normally used in supplementary assessment. A student cannot be granted more that 25% of SA grades within a program.
  2. The SP grade is awarded where a student completes supplementary assessment to a satisfactory level to meet the Unit’s learning outcomes. A mark of 50% is recorded. A limitation applies on the number of SA grades awarded to a student. A student cannot hold more than 25% of SP and SN grades within a program.
  3. The SN grade is awarded where supplementary assessment has not been completed to a satisfactory level. The original mark awarded (between 45% and 49%) is retained. A limitation applies on the number of SA grades awarded to a student. A student cannot hold more than 25% of SP and SN grades within a program.
  4. The NM grade is awarded where a student has achieved an overall mark of 45% or more but failed a mandatory hurdle requirement in a Unit. No mark is recorded.
  5. The DNC grade is awarded where a student does not complete the final examination or a major design assessment where either is used as a mandated hurdle. No mark is recorded.
  6. The interim grade of SE for Supplementary Examination is awarded due to non-attendance at the final examination for reason(s) that comply with CPEE policy.
  7. The RW grade is awarded where a result is withheld pending a decision by CPEE.
  8. The interim grade of AO grade for Assessment Ongoing is awarded where assessment is ongoing over 2 sequential semesters.
  9. A grade of RPL for Recognition of Prior Learning is awarded accordingly as below. Details supporting the grade are recorded in the student file.
    a. Demonstrated accumulation of equivalent knowledge of academic material within a Unit through previous study and/or workplace experience.
    b. Where equivalent learning outcomes have been demonstrated through previous formal study at an equivalent AQF level.
    c. Where equivalent learning outcomes have been demonstrated through formal study at an equivalent AQF level via cross institutional enrolment while enrolled at CPEE.
    d. A combination of the above
  10. The Examination Review Panel may award a Conceded Pass for a Unit even though the student's final percentage mark is less than the deemed pass mark for the Unit. The student’s overall performance in other Units must compensate for the deficiency in the Unit. A conceded pass shall only be awarded by the Examination Review Panel for a Unit being completed by a student within the final semester of their enrolled Program for the award of their Degree. Academic Board may award a Conceded Pass when ongoing student illness or other incapacitation prevents finalisation of a Supplementary Assessment (SA) grade.
