Unit Overview

This unit provides advanced knowledge for professional work with asphalt mixes for road pavements and as a pathway to further learning. It will impart cognitive skills to think critically about materials employed and the methods used to construct asphalt pavements. The unit will also provide specialised technical and creative skills relevant to current and future professional practice. It will further develop the basic skills and knowledge imparted in the core unit Introduction to Pavements.

The unit covers the theory behind designing hot mix asphalt to meet performance criteria and the theory of the testing of mixes to match client requirements. Topics such as weight–volume relationships and their importance in mix design are supported by details of various mix design methods, including the Austroads procedure. The unit also includes coverage of the most common types of asphalt mixes such as dense graded asphalt (DGA), open graded asphalt (OGA), stone mastic asphalt (SMA) and fine gap graded asphalt (FGGA). The topic on testing includes measurement of moisture sensitivity, modulus, wheel tracing and fatigue. The principles of asphalt mix recycling are also included in this unit.
