Austroads Guides Revised

Austroads update brings changes to CPEE Short CoursesAGPT02-12

Last year AUSTROADS released the 2012 version of its “Guide to Pavement Technology, Part 2: Pavement Structural Design” which contained many editorial and technical changes as well as a number of changes to the appendices.

The updating of this important document provided a challenge for CPEE on two fronts. Firstly, the Austroads Guides are used as a significant reference text in a number of the specialised CPEE Distance Learning Units that from part of its Post Graduate programs and impact on those studying the popular CPEE Graduate Certificate and Masters of Technology qualifications. The technical unit notes therefore had to undergo a revision to ensure that the learning material was up to date with the latest information coming out of Austroads.

The second area where CPEE believed it important to reflect the Austroads update related to our specialised technical Short Courses on Pavement Design. As with our distance learning material, the course notes and slide presentations needed to be up dated to reflect the revisions incorporated in the latest version of the guide. This update has now been completed in time for the 2013 series of CPEE short courses on “Flexible Pavement Design – Principles & Practices” that are being staged around Australia, the first of which was held successfully in Newcastle at the end of February. The companion one day short course “Mechanistic Pavement Design – CIRCLY” also relates to the revised Austroads Guide.

The revision by Austroads of the Guide was also a catalyst for the development of a new CPEE 2 day course on Concrete Pavement Design & Construction”.  This new course references the Austroads Guide significantly to ensure consistency of learning across Australia, however it also provides for individual state specific aspects to be advanced and discussed. This 2 day Concrete Design course ise the first of its type being rolled out on a national basis. The course provides a great opportunity for those who have a grounding in flexible pavement design, and/or general concrete understanding and design, to gain an insight and specific understanding of the concrete pavement design and its linkage to construction.

Importantly for those who are involved or likely to be involved in the design and construction of roads and pavements where heavier traffic and loads may be encountered, this course is ideal. Further information on this short course - Concrete Pavement Design & Construction
