Kieran Sharp

Kieran Sharp retired in 2018 after almost 42 years' service to the Australian Road Research Board (ARRB). During that time, he worked on a wide range of pavement, materials and asset management research projects for Austroads, State Road Agencies (including the Queensland NACOE and Western Australia WARRIP programs), the National Transport Commission, industry, the US Army Corps of Engineers and the OECD. He was the Manager of the Australian Accelerated Loading Facility (ALF) program during the 1990s.
At various times he was a member of the Austroads Pavements Reference Group, Asset Management Task Force, Heavy Vehicle Reference Group and Environment Reference Group as well as multiple Project Steering Committees and Reference Groups.

In 2003, Kieran became the first member of ARRB to receive an Austroads Achievement Award in recognition of his contribution to Austroads activities over the previous 20 years.
He has also been involved with various industry-based and FEHRL, OECD and TRB Committees.
Kieran is the Chair of the Technical Committee of the Road Engineering Association of Asia and Australasia (REAAA) and a co-opted member of the Governing Council. In 2012, he was elected an Honorary Member of REAAA. Recently, he has been working with the World Roads Association (PIARC) to establish cooperative technical committees addressing the topics of pavement technology; climate change, sustainability, and emergency management; and road safety. In 2021, he was awarded the inaugural Hwang Fund award for his significant contribution to REAAA and his dedication to gaining more exposure of REAAA and its activities at the international level and to the nurturing of young professionals and engineers in the sector.

In 2013, he was awarded the Roads Australia Award for Technical Excellence. He was also ARRB’s Technical Editor and a mentor to young professionals, both within ARRB and to the REAAA Young Professionals group; this is continuing in his retirement, as are his technical editing activities.
He was the principal author of the book ARRB: The First 50 Years, published in 2011. He is also a co-author of the book Paving Our Ways – A History of the World's Pavements, with Professor Max Lay and Professor John Metcalf, which was published at the end of 2020.

He lives in Melbourne.
