610: Rigid Pavement Construction

This Unit provides advanced knowledge for professional work with rigid road pavements and as a pathway to further learning. It will impart cognitive skills to think critically about materials employed and the methods used to construct rigid pavements. The unit will also provide specialised technical and creative skills relevant to current and future professional practice. It will further develop the basic skills and knowledge imparted in the core unit Introduction to Pavements.

This Unit introduces concrete technology and materials as it applies to rigid road pavement construction. Specifications different applications are addressed including quality assurance and other aspects of contract management. The preparation of the subgrade, selection of plant, concrete production, transport and placement are covered in detail including the compaction, jointing and finishing processes. The unit also deals with the use of roller compacted concrete pavements.

This Unit primarily covers road pavements, with one topic providing an overview of heavy duty and industrial concrete pavements. Pavement configurations vary around the world as do the theoretical concepts on which their design and construction is based. The unit considers all aspects of the planning and implementation of rigid pavement projects in particular the critical construction stage.
