Designed to broaden the skills and knowledge gained in engineering undergraduate courses, as well as to provide specialist skills and knowledge in areas including route assessment, condition assessment and pavement design, construction and stabilisation. The course is a joint arrangement between CPEE and the School of Engineering at the University of Tasmania (UTAS). Further, CPEE has strong links with Austroads members particularly the state road authorities who have collaborated in producing road engineering construction standards and guides. Austroads documents have been adopted by road authorities in Australia and New Zealand and provide significant course reference material.
As roads and pavements form a large component of the national investment in infrastructure, there is increasing appreciation of the need for efficient design and construction to minimize the long-term lifecycle costs, including operation, maintenance, management and renewal of these major physical assets. This increases the demand for technical specialists with road engineering skills to take up career opportunities that exist with State governments, local authorities, private civil and mining companies, contracting, consulting and regulatory organizations.
The courses aim to provide place-bound professional engineers in public works and industry positions with access to modern tools to efficiently design and construct durable roads and highways.

Course Objectives
This course is a joint arrangement with the Centre for Pavement Engineering Education and the School of Engineering at UTAS. CPEE offers industry recognised courses in specialist areas of Infrastructure Asset Management and Road Construction. CPEE has strong links with Austroads members particularly the state road authorities that have collaborated in producing road engineering construction standards and guidelines. These recently published Austroads documents have been adopted by road authorities in Australia and New Zealand. This course has been designed to assist with the understanding and dissemination of this information to practising engineers and is based on Austroads publications. The course provides a specialist capstone year for qualified engineers who wish to focus work in this area.

COMMONWEALTH SUPPORTED PLACES
All Commonwealth supported places are substantially subsidised by the Australian Government so that students only pay 'student contribution' amounts for their units of study.
Eligible Commonwealth supported students (Australian citizens and permanent humanitarian visa holders) can use a HECS-HELP loan to help pay student contribution.

Commonwealth Assistance Form (CAF)
It is a legislative requirement that you complete a CAF if you want to take up a Commonwealth supported place. To complete an eCAF log in to the Universities eStudent, and click on the Commonwealth Assistance tab.
If you use HECS-Help and defer your fees, you will need to include your Tax File Number (TFN).
Even if you pay your fees up-front or have a full scholarship, you still need to complete a CAF but you don’t need to include your TFN.

A Full Fee Paying place is not Commonwealth supported, that is, not subsidised by the Australian Government. If you are a domestic student in a Full Fee Paying place you must pay full tuition fees for your studies.

Invoices
Student contribution or tuition fees will be invoiced to you automatically via the University of Tasmania eStudent once you have enrolled in the units you wish to study.
To view your invoice, login to your eStudent, and click on the Email My Tax Invoice button under the Finance tab.

Professional recognition will come through the proposed course being promoted by State Road Authorities to its stakeholders. The course will also be promoted by CPEE founding partners Austroads and the Australian Asphalt Pavement Association (AAPA) and supported by CPEE partners the Institute of Public Works Engineers Australia (IPWEA) and the Australian Water Association (AWA)

Study Load
Equivalent Full Time Student Load (EFTSL)
Each of our units has an equivalent full time student load (EFTSL) of 0.125 (12.5%).
The study of one unit in a semester would be an ETFSL of 12.5%. A standard full-time load is eight units in the academic year (8*12.5%= 100% or 1 EFTSL). For our programs a full time study load would be 4 units per semester.
Credit Points
Each CPEE unit is worth one (1) credit point unless otherwise specified. One credit point involves a student workload of approximately 10 hours per week over a semester.
Study Hours
In respect to study hours, we estimate that students would need to devote approximately 10 study hours per week, per unit. These study hours are inclusive of teaching time (e.g. lectures, online teaching), independent study, assessment tasks and/or examination time. Our semesters are broken down into study and exam periods. The study period is 15 weeks duration per semester. We state that the student study workload for each unit is 150 hours over the student period. 10hrs*15wks = 150hrs.
